It was a very unique scene that has stayed with me to this day.
After watching this movie, I found myself taking a second look at the discarded plastic bags that are often kicked around on the street.
I find myself envying the flexibility of plastic bags but it seems precarious and sometimes it even feels like my own body is drifting along with them.
American Beauty, scene 2
Angela, a friend of Lester's daughter, Jane, is the teenage girl Lester falls in love with at first sight.
Angela hates being ordinary and wants to be a model in the public eye.
She is seduced by the muscles of her friend's father, a middle-aged man in his 40s.
Angela has been telling her schoolmates that she slept with a famous fashion magazine photographer.
Lester thought that Angela seemed confident, unlike him.
Lester wanted to recapture his youth and his heart through Angela.
But he restrains himself, knowing that Angela is just an ordinary girl who wants to be loved.
American Beauty, scene 3
Ricky's father, Frank, visits Lester in the rain.
It is revealed to Lester that Frank is the homosexual he so hated.
It is his own internal hatred that has caused him to suffocate his wife and son with his excessive discipline.

Reflections on 'American Beauty'
What struck me most about American Beauty was the plastic bags.
It was the roses that caught my eye later.
I noticed the contrasting red and blue colors of the roses when I looked up reviews of the film.
The iconic American flower, the rose, comes in many colors.
Among them, red is said to represent desire.
I also learned that roses in the field are contrasted with roses in a flower bed.
Lester's family, from a distance, appears to be just another typical American middle-class household.
They hate each other, misunderstand each other, and are lonely because they have no one to turn to.
It's a realistic and sensual representation of American society at that time, when it was anxious, confused, and full of desire.
The movie also parallels our lives today.
It was also refreshing to see a black comedy approach to human desire and sexuality, which are often uncomfortable topics to deal with.
It stood out because it brought awareness to the issue without being heavy-handed.
