별은 사람 수보다 많을까?

1980년대 ‘고령’ 외갓집에서 하늘을 올려다봤다.

동네 외가 친척 형제들과 짚을 태워 불놀이했었다.

하얗게 별빛으로 채워진 밤하늘은 이제 기억에만 존재한다.

작년, 강원도에 갔을 때 밤하늘의 별을 볼 수 있기를 기대했다.

하지만 인공위성인지 북극성인지 정체불명의 빛줄기만 올려다봤다.

드문드문 빛의 흔적이 나타났다 사라지긴 했지만 뚜렷하지 않았다.

날씨가 흐려서일까?

맑은 날의 하늘에도 별은 많아야 열 손가락 안쪽이다.

별은 저 위에 항상 빛나고 있다.

뿌연 먼지와 구름에 가려 빛을 통과시키지 못해서 볼 수 없을 것이다.

다시 1980년대의 하늘에서 펼쳐진 별 잔치를 구경할 수 있을까?
